About CDS (Combined Defense Services) Exam

Graduate candidates who aspire to join Indian Army, Indian Navy & Indian Air Force, as an Officer, can appear in CDS Exam. CDS Exam is conducted twice a year, by UPSC, to shortlist candidates for SSB tests, conducted by Service Selection Boards (SSB) of Indian Army, Navy & Air Force. SSB Interview is conducted after CDS Exam

Candidates who get shortlisted / selected in CDS Exam have to undergo SSB tests / Interview, conducted by at SSB (Service Selection Board) of Indian Army / Navy / Air Force. What Happens After CDS Exam and SSB Tests?

Those who get recommended in SSB Tests / Interview have to undergo medical tests. Only those recommended candidates who are found medically fit, as per the laid down standards for respective services i.e. Indian Army, Navy & Air Force, are considered for merit list. Based on the number of available vacancies and score of candidates in CDS Exam and SSB tests, qualified candidates are shortlisted for merit list. Those candidates, who make it in the Merit List, join one of the training institutions i.e. OTA / IMA / INA / AFA, as per their eligibility, for getting trained as “Officers”. Pay and Allowances as an Officer in Indian Army / Navy / Air Force are given in accordance with the laid down rules, which are upgraded from time to time as per government approval. OTA – Officers Training Academy)

Training at OTA - Officers Training Academy

Aim of training at OTA is to mould gentlemen and lady cadets to shoulder the responsibility of an Officer of Indian Army. Also, to imbibe in them the military, intellectual, physical and moral attributes essential for enhancing their job skills and soft skills as well as their professional growth.

Cadets (Gentlemen & Lady) are trained for a duration of 49 weeks at OTA. After successful completion of training cadets are granted Short Service Commission (SSC) with the rank of Lieutenant in one of the main branches of Indian Army. Short Service Commission is for duration of 10 years extendable by 4 years. After completion of 14 years, eligible Officers are also considered for Permanent Commission (PC).

IMA – Indian Military Academy

Training at IMA - Indian Military Academy

The IMA trains cadets to lead from the front. During one year cadets are trained in all aspects of Combat tactics, using technology & other modern tools & technologies. The IMA has excellent facilities for all-round development & adventure sports like river rafting, Para jumping, rock climbing, trekking and mountaineering. On successful completion of training Cadets are granted Permanent Commission (PC) with the rank of Lieutenant in Indian Army, in one of the main branches of Indian Army.

INA – Indian Naval Academy

At Indian Naval Academy cadets are imparted basic training & induction / orientation training of the Navy.  On successful completion of one year training cadets are granted Permanent Commission (PC) with the rank of Sub Lieutenant in Indian Navy, in one of the various branches on Indian Navy.

AFA – Air Force Academy

At Air Force Academy (AFA), cadets are for trained as pilots for flying branch or for ground duty (Non-Technical) or as Ground Duty (Non-Technical) Officers, of Indian Air Force, as per their eligibility. Read more about branches in Indian Air Force.

Flying Branch Cadets of Air Force receive flying training for a period of 1½ years. However, at the end of 1 year of training they are given provisional Commission in the rank of Flying Officer. After successful completion of further training of 6 months, they are absorbed as Permanent Commission (PC) officers on probation for a period of 1 year.

Ground Duties Branch Cadets of Air Force receive stream wise specialist training for a period of one year. At the end of one year of training they are given provisional commission in the rank of Flying Officer. Subsequently, they are absorbed as Permanent Commission (PC) officers on probation for a period of 1 year.


CDS Exam and SSB Tests Preparation

CDS Coaching, in Indore, provided by Star Angel Coaching, starts in March and October, every year. Accordingly, duration of CDS Coaching is 6 months to ensure CDS preparation is completed before CDS exam. CDS exam syllabus for March CDS batch is finished by August and for October CDS batch by March.

SSB Coaching, in Indore, provided by star Angel Coaching, starts every week. Duration of SSB coaching is 2 weeks. Students are advised to take coaching well before their SSB Tests / Interview dates so that they get adequate time not only to prepare for SSB Interview but also to work upon their areas of improvement.
